Butter "dish" is actually a butter "bell"
The reason this butter bell has the butter in the lid part is so you can fill the bottom part with cold water and a pinch of salt to keep your butter fresh and soft on the counter instead of the fridge where butter gets hard.

You just have to keep adding hard butter as you use it up so that there are no spaces between the butter and the water, so the butter stays fresh.
I love mine and I change the water when I add new hard butter.
